How To Choose The Same Pigments With The Different Price

We often meet the different quotation after stay a long time in the pigment market. Price is high or low, sometimes there will be hesitation to choose , today we will discuss what we should consider in such a condition.

Pigments this product what is a little complicated from the subdivision ,We often classify it into several grades according to its different application.  Sometimes we classified the shade again  in the same application. It is no strange one pigments with 5-6 grades, For example, PR 57:1, For plastic application, we should consider migration resistance and heat resistance when producing. Generally,  we usuall recommend 4BP to customers.

As a solvent ink use, the production should be consider the gloss, and color shade, we usually recommend 4BL or 4BGL to customers.

As a water-based use, the factory should focus on the viscosity, if the viscosity higher,  when used in winter, it is easier to be pump, thicken. This which requires the technology to understand which additive is more suitable for the production.

With so many specifications, the price is different, but we know that strength is still the main factor in determining the price. Between the factory and the factory, the same grade (application) comparison, generally the most difference is $0.15-$0.3/kgs , if there is big difference, we have to consider is that : “the sky will not fall pie” , where are these cheap pigments from ? There are about three reasons:

1）Color matched pigments, the people who do the technical in the factory must knowledge of the color matching, such as Red + Yellow=orange, this matched pigment is generally not pure, and the price is also much lower than the pure grade , If some customers don`t have the high request, and price-sensitive can choose this kind, but we should pay attention to the performance that is not very good use, for example, plastic use, if you have requirements for heat resistance, this color matched pigments is easier to fade.

2）Add filler, generally some factory will choose calcium carbonate do filler, a pigment, originally has 100%content with the pure price, but if we do 90% pigment + 10% filler, the cost will be down, the price will be about 10% lower,

When we do the drawdown paper test, sometimes the full color shows the same,  while the TINT shows the big difference between pure pigment and 90% pigment. We know that the higher strength of a pigment, we use less pigments in the plastic, ink production, it can save the cost, and the higher the purity, sometimes has the better performance.

3)Pigment replacement, this is less, but sometimes some suppliers do the same, for example, For water based , PR 81, because its price is very high, so some suppliers provide red 169, the price is much lower, customers to do testing, found the shade is almost the same, , red 169 and red 81 is a same series , both can be used interchangeably, some customers without high requirements, can also accept red 169 take palce of red 81, after all the price is attractive.

These all the factor we summarize from the experience,  we know the price of a pigment, is composed of market, raw materials, artificial and other factors, generally in the same quality, the  same purchase period, the price difference between $0.15--0.3/kgs, if lower much than the market price, we should test samples, and consider the credibility of the supplier firstly,       then to make a choice. If it is much higher than the market price, it may customized products, such as clariant size and so on.
